167th St. subway station reopens after months of repairs

The B and D lines have reopened for public use at the 167 Street subway stop after months of rerouting commuters for repairs.
A major highlight of the upgrades is the new mosaic subway art - called beacons – that feature people who have impacted the history of the borough.  People include Bronx native Sonia Sotomayor, Maya Angelou and Reggie Jackson.

It’s all part of millions of dollars in upgrades made to the 167th Street subway stop, and part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s enhanced station initiative.

The plan was controversial for its focus on cosmetic upgrades rather than service fixes.

The station had been closed since August, but is now open with enhanced LED lights, new signage and stairs and fixes to the electrical and communications systems.

The original goal of the initiative was to spend $28 million fixing 32 stations. The MTA exceeded those numbers, so only 19 have been renovated. The other stations will have to wait for the MTA’s next spending plan in 2020.
