Get the bread and milk: Preps underway for pair of winter storms

Preparations were underway Thursday for the one-two punch of winter storms hitting Long Island.
Many Long Islanders used their downtime to get ready, which for some included heading to County Line Hardware in Huntington Station. Tom Corrigan, of Woodbury, loaded up his truck with more than a half-dozen bags of ice melt for his construction business.
"We have snowplows and contracts that we have to take care of," he said.
Jane Jollon stopped in to get supplies to protect her pet chickens from the storm: "I'm going to cover the chicken coop with tarp and a blanket to keep them warm."
Store workers put out a new stock of shovels, ice melt and de-icers in anticipation of the messy mix of snow, rain and ice expected over the next few days.
Town of Oyster Bay officials said salt and sanding trucks were loaded, fueled up and ready to pretreat and clear the roads. They had 12,000 tons of sand salt and 300 pieces of equipment to tackle the town's roughly 850 miles of roads.
Officials urged residents to stay off the roads and to pull cars into driveways if possible.
