A program in the Vernon C. Bain Center helps inmates learn about what it means to be a parent.

The program, called SMART, stands for Specialized Model for Adult Re-entry and Training and is done in partnership with the nonprofit organization Samaritan Daytop Village.

During the class, inmates are taught how to be a good parent outside of jail. They are asked to reflect on their own childhood experiences and who they viewed as a role model growing up.

Organizers say the class is meant to make the transition back to home easier for inmates in more than one area, including financial literacy and work readiness.

Inmates can also take classes in electrical and plumbing.

Student Paul Taylor says the best part about the class is the hope it brings during a time when it's easy to be negative.

Once released, the inmates can still take advantage of the SMART program through linking with Samaritan Daytop Village.  The nonprofit helps with finding a job, writing resumes, or looking for a new place to live.

The center holds inmates for the ctiy’s Department of Corrections in the Bronx.
