A neighborhood in the East Bronx that's proud of its roots is looking to the future as it grows into one of the borough's hottest areas.

Parkchester is alive and well, and considered by some to be the cultural capital of the Bronx.

"The residents come from all walks of life from all over the world," says community activist Sheikh Musadrammeh. "It is a very vibrant neighborhood, very good neighborhood to live, work."

News 12 followed community advocates making stops at Puerto Rican restaurant Joe's Place, Jewish bakery Zaro's and the Metropolitan Oval - where a building across the street is home to a woman who helped change the world.

In Alabama, Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on the bus. 

"She was 15 years old and she just thought it was her constitutional right not to have to get up during the 1950s, when segregation was alive and well," says community advocate Jen Lackard. "And she lives here right in the Bronx in Parkchester."

"It's a beautiful nestled community," says Lackard. "I think it's really good that all of this is happening here and celebrating the value of what Parkchester brings."
