Police say a suspect wanted in connection to a three-borough crime spree pinned an officer with a stolen vehicle in the Bronx Monday, prompting the officer to open fire.
The scene unfolded on Sheridan Avenue near East 162nd Street around 11:30 a.m. as officers confronted teen suspects who were wanted in connection to a crime spree that spanned the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan.
According to police, the suspects carjacked a vehicle around 6 a.m. Sunday in the Bronx. The suspects drove the car to Manhattan, where they allegedly committed a street robbery.
The suspects then drove to Brooklyn, where police say they committed two more robberies, then left the scene of an accident, and carjacked another vehicle -- a black Hyundai Sonata.
Police say that car was being tracked by a federal robbery division. They say a license plate reader alerted officers to the stolen vehicle in the Bronx just before 11 a.m. Monday, and officers with the 44th Precinct began searching the area.
The vehicle was found double-parked in front of 909 Sheridan Ave. As a uniformed officer approached the vehicle, police say the driver suddenly put it in reverse, pinning the officer against another parked car. The officer opened fire, striking the driver.
The car came to a stop, and the vehicle's three occupants were taken into custody. The driver was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln with gunshot wounds to her chest and torso. She was listed in critical but stable condition.
The female officer who was pinned was hospitalized in stable condition with injuries to her hip, leg and pelvis area.
Police say two of the suspects arrested today were also recently arrested for being involved in an additional carjacking and robbery back on Jan. 22 in the Bronx.
The suspects in the case have not been identified at this time.
Police say a search of the stolen vehicle turned up a knife. The case remains under investigation.
