Firefighters battled a fire at an apartment building in Mount Eden late Monday night, officials say.
The FDNY says the fire broke out on the sixth floor of the building around 10 p.m.
Agustin Amaro, a tenant of the building, says a neighbor alerted him of the danger just before 10 p.m. as his apartment, now destroyed, began to fill with smoke.
The FDNY says it deployed 25 units to battle the fire, and that there were flames on the top floor and in the building's loft.
The fire was under control by 11 p.m.
Amaro says himself and his wife initially decided to remain in the apartment, which lacks heat and electricity. They say they rejected the Red Cross's offer for help because an ambulette picks his sister-in-law up from the address three times a week to receive dialysis treatment.
The super of the building tells News 12 that the family has since agreed to relocate after learning of the potential danger of remaining in the apartment.
The Red Cross says that if anyone is in need of medical assistance, they have on-call nurses who can help provide care once residents are relocated.
The FDNY says there were no reported injuries of the building's residents or the firefighters.
