Police Commissioner James O'Neill and Mayor Bill de Blasio broke down the city's crime stats for January at a news conference Tuesday, highlighting some concern areas.

Overall crime dropped 8 percent this January compared to last January. Shootings dropped to a record low -- 52 this year, compared to 59 last year. That figure was driven by a 40 percent reduction in shootings in the Bronx.

But not every figure was positive. January saw 27 murders, five more than this time last year. There was also a sharp increase in reported hate crimes to a total of 42. There were 19 at this point in 2018.

"The outrage continues, our hate crimes task force goes out to community meetings trying to spread the word about what is a hate crime," says NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

There has also been an increase in rape reports. The NYPD is responding to that by adding about three dozen investigators to the Special Victims Unit.
