94-year-old with heart disease says diet, exercise is key for management

CO-OP CITY -

A 94-year-old Co-Op City resident living with hypertensive heart disease says diet and exercise are how he is able to manage the condition.

Stanley Bertie, an Army veteran, says he has lived with heart disease for longer than he can remember, but hasn't let his age or condition slow him down.

He says that for the last decade, he's been working with nurse Fatima Sanchez from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York and crafted a diet and fitness program to keep his health in check.

Sanchez says people with or at risk for heart disease should avoid foods with sodium like potato chips, cheeses and canned foods. She recommends eating fish for a good source of omega-3 fats and fiber, like oats and whole grains.

Bertie says he also does foot taps, arm raises, and uses water bottle as weights during his workout routine.

February is American Heath Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in every 4 deaths in the U.S. is caused by heart disease.
