Diocese of Brooklyn names dozens of clergy accused of sex abuse
A list of more than 100 names of clergy members "credibly" accused of sexually abusing children has been released by the Diocese of Brooklyn.
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio says he hopes the list, that dates back decades, will deter similar crimes and restore faith to those who have been affected by sexual misconduct in the church.
"Many victims I've met with have told me more than anything they want an acknowledgement of what was done to them," DiMarzio said.
Those named include bishops, priests and deacons.
Six names were from St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Flatlands and four names were from Holy Family in Canarsie.
Borough residents say the move was long overdue and some even thought it was too late to release some of the names.
"These accusations, alleged accusations happened years and years ago," one person said. "So I think they should be a little more discreet."
DiMarzio has also hosted listening sessions in the borough to raise awareness and give victims a space to speak.
According to DiMarzio, there have been only two incidents in his diocese over the past 17 years, but he says that number is still too high.
"The changes in the charter have largely been effective," DiMarzio said. "From sex abuse awareness training to ongoing background checks for all clergy."
The bishop also said that two-thirds of the people listed are deceased.
