Live wires trap children after school bus strikes pole in Stamford

Children riding on a school bus were trapped Thursday morning when their bus struck a utility pole and sent live wires crashing down onto the vehicle, officials say.
The bus was transporting three students to Rippowam Middle School and AITE High School when it crashed on Sunset Road and West Trail. One student was treated for minor injuries, says Trevor Roach, the assistant chief of Stamford Fire Department.
The driver kept the students on the bus, which firefighters say was the right decision. Students remained on the bus for an hour before Eversource turned off the electricity.
Police say slick conditions caused the crash, though the area had already been treated with salt and sand. Stamford public school officials say the superintendent didn't feel Thursday's weather warranted a two-hour delay.
