Police: Bronx driver found fatally stabbed in car in Baychester

BAYCHESTER -

A Bronx man was found stabbed to death in his car Saturday night after working a driving shift, according to police.

Police say Ganiou Gandonou was found in his Camry on the Hutchinson River Parkway East with stab wounds to his neck and chest.

Gandonou’s wife, Latifatou Alimi, says she was notified of her husband's death early Sunday morning.

“I don't know how my life is going to be without him,” says Alimi. “It was only me, him and my 2-year-old son.”

Alimi says she and her husband came to the United States from Africa in search of a better life.

Family members say Gandonou was a registered Uber driver, and went out Saturday night to make some extra money. Alimi says that when she called her husband to check in, he told her that he would call back because he had a customer.

Fernando Mateo, a spokesman for the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, says it is unclear if Gandonou was working for Uber, another for-hire service or picking up a street hail at the time of his death.

Although it's not clear if Gandonou had surveillance cameras in his cab, the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers says a lot of app-based cab services do not require their drivers to have surveillance cameras in their vehicles.

The federation is urging the installation of cameras to become mandatory so that more drivers do not have to wind up in the hospital or even losing their lives.

The Federation of Taxi Drivers and Independent Drivers Guild are now both offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer.

Uber released a statement that read, "This is a horribly tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the grieving family. We stand ready to work with law enforcement to assist their investigation in any way possible."
