Proposed plan to bring 4 new Metro-North stations to the Bronx still on track
The Bronx community is taking part in discussions on the proposed plan to bring four new Metro-North stations to the borough.
An open house was held at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine with all of the agencies involved, setting up tables and presentations for Bronx residents.
In January, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the MTA, Empire State Development and Amtrak reached an agreement that will bring four additional Metro-North railroad stations on the underutilized rail line in the East Bronx with access to Penn Station.
The four stations are expected to be in Hunts Point, Co-Op City, Parkchester, Van Nest and Morris Park.
Officials say the extra transit option will dramatically reduce commute times for Bronx residents.
"It's great because I live in Connecticut and this will allow me to get home in 30 minutes opposed to 45 or an hour," says Dr. Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani, an associate professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The Department of City Planning says this is an opportunity for residents to learn about the draft recommendations and share their own perspectives to guide investments in the right place.
Residents have been concerned about possible congestion from the new stations, but they had a chance to have their questions answered at the events.
Officials say building the Metro-North stations will expand the labor pool coming into the East Bronx.
"There's about 20,000 jobs here and we think there's a great opportunity to grow that number and that a Metro-North Station is going to really bolster this area," says Nate Gray of the NYC Economic Development Corporation.
The open house allowed members of the community to use chips to show the city where they'd like it to invest its money.
