A Fordham University student has died after falling almost 40 feet from the bell tower on campus, according to a statement from the school's president.

President Joseph M. McShane confirmed that senior Sydney Monfries died Sunday.

"Our hearts go out to Sydney's parents, and her family and friends--theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief," McShane said in his statement.

Police say a group of seniors at the university climbed the tower early Sunday morning to get a better view of the city.

Monfries then fell and was rushed to the hospital.

Monfries was weeks away from graduation, according to the university. Fordham will confer a bachelor's degree upon Monfries posthumously, according to McShane.
