Con Ed: Equipment fire causes power line explosions in Throgs Neck

Posted: Updated:
THROGS NECK -

Video shows a series of explosions Monday along power lines on East Tremont Avenue.

Con Edison says a piece of overhead equipment caught fire and fell to the ground, causing explosions. Residents say the power lines then hit the ground, causing many to scramble inside for safety.

Customers say there was a short power outage, but electricity was quickly returned.

Power lines remained on the ground for a short time afterward, and Con Ed officials warned that some were still live.

Sections of East Tremont Avenue were blocked off Monday night as Con Edison worked to secure the area.

Officials say no one was injured.
