Homeless shelter plan in Parkchester sparks rally

Posted: Updated:
PARKCHESTER -

Residents in Parkchester, along with Councilman Ruben Diaz Sr., rallied against a new homeless shelter planned for 2008 Westchester Ave.

The shelter is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's Turning the Tide initiative. The Department of Homeless Services says 170 employed and employable single men will be moving into Parkchester.

Part of that initiative is to close cluster sites in the Five Boroughs, where private landlords worked with the city to house homeless people.

Those at the rally said they didn’t feel comfortable with the shelter in the community and were confused as to why the shelter had to be all male, as opposed to a shelter for families.

The city can legally move forward without public approval.
