A change is in store for those who take the express bus to Manhattan that is causing some problems in Riverdale.
For those traveling on the express bus to Manhattan, spare change is no longer a way to pay.
Riverdale residents say this is particularly difficult for them because they say there are no options to purchase a MetroCard in the area.
"We have to take a bus and if we don't have the money for a bus, we are either walking or talking a cab. I find that absolutely ridiculous," says Riverdale resident Leah Rodriguez.
It's almost a 40-minute walk from the Riverdale stop to the closest subway station.
The MTA explains the change is all in an effort to make traveling easier for commuters. It says, in part, "We're committed to safely speeding up our buses and making payment faster allows us to achieve that goal, which is why we are encouraging the less than 1% of our customers who used to use coins to plan ahead."
According to the MTA, those who take the bus can use easy-pay MetroCards that automatically refill or use their new OMNY system, which allows riders to pay on a smartphone.
OMNY is expected to be on all buses and subways by 2020.
