The FDNY and ACS are teaming up to keep families safe.

The FDNY is showing members of the Administration for Children's Services simple ways to prevent fires.

Firefighters are hoping their work will keep them off the front-line fighting fires. 

"A result of the fire in the Bronx where 13 people lost their lives, we realized it was important to get into people's homes and look for fire safety hazards," says Michael Kozo, of the FDNY.

Thanks to fire safety seminars, firefighters hope these workers will be able to help families during their visits.

"So that when they go out and meet the families and they see safety issues in the homes, they can educate and empower families to prevent tragedies," says Sadra Davidson, ACS assistant commissioner.

The FDNY is teaching them about fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and new laws, specifically one that went into effect after a fire in the Belmont section of the Bronx killed 13 people. 

"As a result of the fire here in the Bronx where 13 people lost their lives. It was a result of the child playing with the stove, so there are now requirements to have tenants to have stove knob covers if they have children under the age of six," says child protective specialist Fanise Abraham.

Landlords in the city are now required to provide knob covers if a tenant requests them, if their child is under the age of six.

ACS workers also learned how to spot hazards that can start electrical fires.  

They say classes like these will save lives.
