THE BRONX -

The New York City Department of Education is recognizing educators with the prestigious Big Apple Awards in honor of teacher appreciation week.

One of the recipients is both well-known at the school he teaches as well as at News 12.

News 12’s Dave Roush is a media and communications instructor at Harry S. Truman High School and is one of 17 teachers receiving the honor. With a huge smile on his face and overcome with emotions, the 11-year veteran accepted the prestigious Big Apple Award.

The Big Apple Awards is a citywide recognition program celebrating New York City teachers who inspire children and go above and beyond for their school. Several students nominated Roush saying he is more than a teacher, calling him “Papa Roush.”

On top of his award, he will be able to attend meetings with the chancellor to discuss ways to improve the education system. Roush tells News 12 his goal is to keep pushing all his students to do better.

Roush will also be honored at Yankee Stadium on May 29 along with the other winners.
