A new effort is underway in Albany to close a controversial East End sand-mining operation that has already had its permits revoked.

Sand Land in Noyac has drawn the ire of many residents and environmentalists who say Suffolk County tests of groundwater under the site found elevated levels of harmful chemicals.

The state Department of Environmental Conversation tried to shut down the mine, but later reversed course and allowed it to operate for another eight years.

To combat the turnaround, state Sen. Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele have introduced bills in Albany that would prohibit mining in nine special groundwater protection areas, one of which is Sand Land.

LaValle told News 12 in a statement, "Ceasing mining activities where the water standards are exceeded is essential to meet our goals. Our legislation is necessary to ensure a healthy water supply."

Lawmakers have until June 21 to debate the bill, when the current legislative session ends.
