As Pride Month officially kicks off, one woman is making strides for the LGBTQ community in Port Morris.
Audrey De Jesus plans to open the first gay bar in Port Morris this fall.

“Right now it's raw, open space. So, if you leave it to your imagination, it could be anything,” says De Jesus.
The space on 132 Street, which is currently a motorcycle shop, will hold the bar that she says the borough desperately needs.

“When I was growing up, and I was going to Brooklyn and Queens to see drag shows or to go to a nice restaurant, it was always out of my borough. Why can't we do it?” says De Jesus.

De Jesus plans on converting the space into a three-story bar and restaurant with drag and burlesque shows and even a rooftop garden overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

“This is a borough of legacies. We build legacies here. So why not do the footprints for a big, huge gay bar?” she says.

De Jesus tells News 12 they’ll be opening the bar without a name, but they're going to ask people who come into the bar to write down suggestions.

She ultimately wants to create a franchise in the Bronx, but for now she's taking it one day at a time, hoping to create an outlet for young people in the borough.

"I want this to be an open, friendly establishment where they can feel comfortable in being who they are, dress how they are, whatever they want to do,” says De Jesus.
