Body found at Plumb Beach; chief of detectives confirms death of detective

A police investigation by Plumb Beach Thursday ended with the discovery of a body believed to be an NYPD detective.
Officers, K9 units and NYPD boats searched the area of Plumb Beach near the Belt Parkway for hours Thursday. It led to congestion for several hours on the nearby highway.
Later Thursday evening, police were seen removing a body from the beach and placing it into an ambulance. Officers surrounded the body as it was escorted by motorcade away from the scene.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea tweeted confirmation of the death of Detective Joe Calabrese Thursday evening, but police have not yet confirmed that the body found at Plumb Beach was Calabrese.
An investigation was launched to find Calabrese after he was last seen at Maimonides Medical Center early Thursday morning.
The circumstances surrounding Calabrese's death are still unclear.
