A staple of the South Bronx for over 100 years, All Hallows High School is making history as the all-boys school is hiring its first female principal.
Susan Natale is the first female principal ever at All Hallows High School.
Natale graduated from Manhattan College in the Bronx. She spent over a decade at Iona Prep in Westchester as their academic dean. But for All Hallows, it wasn't her past that made them hire her, it was her vision of the future.
"What she's done in terms of technology, STEM education, and moving kids forward to prepare them not only for the jobs of today, but for the jobs that may not even be invented yet,” says Ron Schutte, All Hallows H.S. president.
Now part of Natale's plan to include technology in the classroom involves the teachers. She plans on having them all being Google Level 1 certified this year, and that will allow them to use Google Classroom for the students. Students will also get Google Chromebooks that they'll be able to keep once they graduate.
"We want them to be at the same level as everyone else going off to college and have the same ability and knowledge to use the computer,” says Natale.
Natale's ability to look ahead includes the school itself and she answered definitively when asked if her hiring meant the all-boys school could go co-ed.
"This school is staying the way it is. This school is going to be an all-boys school. My position and me coming in as first female has nothing to do with co-education coming into play at all,” says Natale.
She'll officially take over as principal on July 1 and begin working toward her goal.
"Continue to educate the boys and put them in the best colleges, get them the best scholarships, get them placed into college so they ultimately get a job. This is their home and I want to make it the best home that they can have,” says Natale.
