‘We believe that the election is over.’ Patterson-Howard maintains lead in mayoral race
Shawyn Patterson-Howard, the underdog of the Democratic primary for Mount Vernon mayor, continues to maintain the lead in Tuesday’s election.

"We went directly to the community, we spoke to people at train stations, knocking on doors, had meet and greets and we did town halls. And I believe our message resonated with the community, and that is what made the difference,” she says.

Patterson-Howard garnered 2,355 votes on primary night, 33% of the votes. Thomas trails behind by over 200 votes and 3 percentage points. These numbers don't include absentee and affidavit ballots, which will be added over the next seven days.

Clyde Isley conceded Tuesday, but Andre Wallace did not, and could possibly run again in November as a Republican.

"We believe that the election is over. We believe the people have spoken, but we still respect the process of the absentee ballot and the affidavit ballots and we will wait on the commissioner to certify the election,” says Patterson-Howard.

Mayor Richard Thomas told News 12 Tuesday night he will wait until every last vote is counted before making any announcement. Thomas says he's not ready to throw in the towel, telling News 12 post-primary night that he has major concerns.
Democratic Commissioner Reginald Lafayette told News 12 they had collected 67 absentee ballots as of 2 p.m. Wednesday. He says at this current rate it would be difficult for Mayor Thomas to take the lead.
