A Bronx woman is using laughter to share her experience as an organ donor and to raise awareness about organ donation.
Amanda Nicastro is the star of "I'm just Kidneying” – a one-woman comedy show about the organ donation process. She says the show makes it easier for loved ones to have that conversation.
Five years ago, Amanda's younger sister Brenna was in need of a second kidney transplant. She was not a match for her sister, but through paired donation, Amanda donated her kidney to another woman. Her husband in return donated one of his kidneys to Brenna.
When she’s not on stage, Nicastro works with LiveOnNY – an organ and tissue donation nonprofit that educates and supports people going through the process.
According to LiveOnNY, New York was last in the country last year in percentage of residents registered as organ donors.
"In our country, every 10 minutes someone is added to the waitlist,” she told News 12.
