Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was welcomed by a chorus of cheers at her town hall meeting focused on immigration Saturday.

She made national headlines alongside three other freshman congresswomen last week after controversial tweets from the president.

The town hall meeting drew many people to Corona, Queens – the borough historically is known for its diversity with immigrants from around the world.

Community members, activists and elected officials drew from their own personal experiences while raising awareness for immigrants to know their rights.

“My mom would go out to work to clean an office at night and I wouldn't know if she was going to come home,” said Rep. Ocasio-Cortez. “I had to emergency plan what I was going to do with my two sisters and brother."

The Bronx and Queens representative also offered a message of hope to immigrant families across the country.

“The America we are fighting for is loving and accepting. It actualizes potential and does not see immigrants as deficits. They see them as assets and opportunity,” she said.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez told attendees that her hope is for the immigration process to be a civil proceeding and for all people to be safe.
