Bronx artist creates mural on Highbridge step street

Posted: Updated:

A Bronx artist is hoping to make a Highbridge step street a bit more enjoyable.

Laura Alvarez created an explosion of color – with the help of volunteers - that ascends up the 125 steps near West 169th Street.

The mural was commissioned by the nonprofit WHEDco.

Alvarez says she was inspired by community gardens in the area and hoped to bring some of that beauty to the concrete steps.

She says painting steps is a real challenge.  After priming the steps, they had to break down the images into smaller pieces before they could put the final look together.

WHEDco says it hopes to commission more neighborhood murals in the near future.
