Mystery smell waking up residents in middle of the night in Clason Point

Posted: Updated:

A mystery smell is so bad in Clason Point, it's waking up residents in the middle of the night.

News 12 spoke with one resident who says it has been happening for more than two years.

Residents say the smell randomly strikes but for the most part,  it picks up at around 9 or 10 p.m. and permeates the air.

Manny Arroyo has lived in the neighborhood since 1983 and says as an asthmatic, it's suffocating.

Arroyo says hes called 311 and was assured that the Department of Environmental Protection would come check it out, but nothing has changed.

He claims the smell originally came from a manhole near the corner of O'Brien and Westchester avenues. Ever since construction began on the sewer lines, he says the mystery stench has amplified.

"I can understand a slight odor, but what's coming out of here for the last two months it's terrible. It's in your face. You can't breathe. You can almost taste it that's how bad it is," said Arroyo.

News 12 has reached out to the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Design and Construction for comment and have not heard back yet.
