State wants NYers to pick, and pay for, new license plates

New license plates are coming to New York, and the state wants you to pick the design. But it also wants you to pay for it -- and for some drivers the change will be mandatory.
The state is letting New Yorkers vote between five designs. The winner will become the new look of license plates in the Empire State.
The new plates will replace the blue and white ones, which are more than 10 years old. New York drivers with outdated license plates will have to pay $25 for a new one -- but some think the state should pump the brakes.
"I'm disappointed with the proposal. I think right now many New Yorkers are struggling just to get by," says state Sen. John Brooks (D-Massapequa).
Brooks says instead of making tax payers reach into their pockets, the government could maybe be more careful with its spending.
Others say they're OK with paying the fee - as long as the money is put to good use.
According to the state, 100 percent of the money made from the license plate fees will go to highway, road, and bridge programs.
The new plates will roll out in April 2020.
