Ceremony honors memory of ‘Junior’ while helping kids get ready for school

Posted: Updated:
A special ceremony was held in the Bronx Monday to honor Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz, the teen who was slain in a gang-related killing at a bodega last summer, while also helping other young people in the community get ready to go back to school.

The event at the Butler Houses in Claremont Village was a collaboration between community groups and elected officials. Organizers say they're aiming to provide kids with the tools they need for success, in order to a prevent a tragedy like the one that cut Junior's life short.

Leandra Feliz, Junior's mother, and Genesis Collado-Feliz, his sister, both accepted a plaque and a signed basketball in Junior's memory. And the Bronx Parent Housing Network partnered with D-Foy Community Center at the Butler Houses to hand out book bags to local kids in need as the school year gets underway.

The money used to purchase the book bags was part of City Council funding for after-school programming.

As News 12 has reported, Junior's family is now awaiting sentencing for the five men convicted in his June 2018 murder. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 17.

The Bronx District's Attorney's Office says the trial for the next eight defendants is scheduled for Oct. 21. Leandra Feliz says she is not sure if she will read her impact statement in court on sentencing day.
