Community members voice concerns over proposed substance abuse treatment center

Posted: Updated:

One community is fighting to keep a substance abuse treatment center out of the area.

Tempers flared as community members voiced their concerns to a representative from the Carnegie Hill Institute at a Community Board 11 Tuesday night.

The board says there is no need for a substance abuse treatment center at 2500 Williamsbridge Road.

The community is concerned that public safety will be in jeopardy. The representative says the institute would be open to respond to those concerns.

Carnegie Hill originally tried to put the facility on East Tremont Avenue, but Community Board 10 says the building was rejected.

Carnegie Hill says this proposed center would not serve as a methadone clinic, but Community Board 11 is still worried about the impact on the community.

Carnegie Hill's representative says the institute is in contract to purchase the new space on Williamsbridge Road.

The board is not supporting this and has requested a town hall meeting.
