New Yorkers can post bail at new window at Bronx Criminal Court

Posted: Updated:

A new window in the basement of the Bronx Criminal Court is the latest location where New Yorkers can pay bail.

After a City Council mandate back in 2017, the Bronx's bail payment window finally opened for the first time on Sept. 9.

After months of delays, the window will now be open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., depending on the courthouse's hours. Before the window was built, the only other DOC facility was located at the Veronic C. Bain Center.

Elena Weissmann is the director of the Bronx Freedom Fund, a nonprofit that pays bail for those accused of misdemeanors. She says in the week since the window first opened, members of her organization have already used it several times.

At least eight people have posted bail at the location so far.

The Department of Correction Commissioner says, "No person should be held any longer than the law requires, and this new bail window is an example of one more thing we can do to help people who are eligible return to their communities, families and jobs as soon as possible."

Loved ones of defendants who have been arraigned and granted cash bail can pay at the window and get the accused out of DOC custody.
