Police: Alleged intoxicated driver crashes into stroller, killing 1-year-old

Posted: Updated:
Police say an alleged intoxicated driver struck and killed a one-year-old in a stroller in the Bronx on Tuesday.

Police say it happened at around 4 p.m. and that the driver is in custody.

Witnesses say the child's mother was standing near the corner of White Plains Road and East 215th Street talking to a few people when a white BMW jumped the curb and struck her stroller.

Shauna Downer says she will never forget this tragedy. She was standing on the sidewalk when she says the collision happened and her friend saved her life.

"I was very close to where the vehicle was heading and she grabbed me," said Downer.

The good Samaritan was injured while saving her friend, but one life that could not be saved was that of an 18-month-old who was pinned against the wall in a stroller.

Police say the man did not have his license.

The witnesses say the driver suddenly veered to the right and jumped the sidewalk.  They say they immediately tried to push the vehicle off of the stroller, but the child was already unconscious.

Witnesses say the driver remained on scene after the collision. They also say the mother did not wait for first responders and rushed to the hospital.
