SUNY Maritime alumnus, 3 kids killed during Hurricane Dorian

Posted: Updated:

Former SUNY Maritime students are honoring a fallen classmate and his three children who were killed in Hurricane Dorian.

Phillip Thomas and his three kids were among the victims of Dorian, leaving his wife Barri Thomas as the family's only survivor.

After the news, a friend of Thomas knew he had to take action. John Cirenza quickly started a GoFundMe page that has already raised more than $87,000 in donations.

"Our alumni always look out for one another. So this is just an extension really of the community spirit that's really developed while here at their four years at Maritime College," said alumni Justin Gathard.

Cirenza says he'll remember Thomas as what he calls a "humble leader."

"I mean he was just an amazing person, a loving father, he had three amazing kids and they all looked up to him," said Cirenza.

Thomas graduated in 2008 and moved back home to the Bahamas where he worked as a captain.
