Council Member Fernando Cabrera on Friday honored the two men who are being hailed as heroes for rescuing a 5-year-old girl from the train tracks in Kingsbridge earlier this week.
Jairo Torres and Antonio Love, who say they were in the right place at the right time, were honored with a proclamation for saving a 5-year-old girl who had fallen into a crawl space on a subway track.
Police say the girl's father, Fernando Balbuena, jumped onto the tracks at the Kingsbridge subway station Monday morning with his little girl in his arms. The 45-year-old man was killed instantly. Torres and Love pulled the girl out from underneath the train.
Torres says he jumped right away because he knew where the child was located. He says he saw the child move her hand and knew that she was still alive.
Both men say they feel a special connection to the child and her family, and plan to be in their lives for a long time.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. says the men are examples to all New Yorkers.
"Courage is the ability to, or the act, or doing something under pain and grief, and that something can't be pulling out your cellphone," says Diaz Jr.
Cabrera's office says Love did not attend Friday's ceremony, but they do have a proclamation with his name on it.
Torres said he had no plans of attending the ceremony until her mother said she needed Torres there with her.
