Bronx residents in Westchester Square are outraged over an approved development for a vacant lot on Blondell Avenue.
Plans are in the works to build a mixed-use affordable housing development on the former junkyard site.
Earlier in the year, both Community Board 10 and Community Board 11 gave the development plan a thumbs down. However, it was approved four months later by the New York City Council.
Residents in the community are pointing a finger at City Councilman Mark Gjonaj. They're particularly disturbed about a recent Crain's article that raised eyebrows about the project.
There is now a petition circulating within the community. However, some in the community believe new housing on the block will benefit the neighborhood.
A spokesperson for Gjonaj's office told News 12 that the councilman was responsible for scaling down the development to fit the neighborhood, which was a major concern for many in the community.
The City Council released a statement saying,"The City Council worked closely with the community to bring badly needed affordable housing to the Bronx. We addressed many of their concerns, including reducing the height of the building so it could be more in scale with the surrounding neighborhood. The Council has a rigorous vetting process which this project benefited from."
