Wake held for NYPD officer killed in Edenwald Sunday

Posted: Updated:

It was somber day as family and friends began their final goodbyes to NYPD Officer Brian Mulkeen.

The Monroe native was killed by friendly fire on Sunday after a struggle with a suspect in the Bronx.

A wake was held Thursday afternoon and another service is scheduled for Thursday evening at Smith, Seaman and Quackenbush Funeral Home in Monroe.

His funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church.

Officer Mulkeen's alma mater will also close Friday for his funeral. The Monroe-Woodbury School District superintendent emailed parents saying around 25,000 people are expected to attend Mulkeen’s funeral, meaning there will be several road closures.

His family released this statement saying, "Brian always had a strong and commanding presence and dedicated his life to making the world around him better. We couldn't be prouder, and hope he continues to serve as an inspiration to others. He will never be forgotten and was loved by everyone. He is a true hero."
