Community members in Brighton Beach say they’ve been without running water for an entire month and want the city to take responsibility.
The community protested Tuesday in front of 305 Oceanview Ave. where they say problems with the water system began when a pipe started leaking into the basement last month.
The Department of Environmental Protection shut off water to the pipe which cut off water to nearly 19 homes in the area.
The DEP says the pipe is privately owned, therefore the responsibility falls on the homeowners to maintain and repair it. They added that they are legally restricted from taking control.
The homeowners say they’ve paid for a private plumber but have still encountered issues. They say repairs have been snagged by a homeowner who won’t provide access to their backyard.
