Grandmother claims Bronx school failed to treat injured 11-year-old

A Bedford Park grandmother is demanding answers from the city Department of Education after she says her 11-year-old granddaughter with special needs was pushed down a flight of stairs at her school.
Rhonda Scott told News 12 that her granddaughter, Vivian, told her she was shoved down a full flight of stairs earlier this month by another student with special needs at Middle School 80.
Scott claims that on the day Vivian was shoved, she was questioned behind closed doors by two administrators instead of being taken to the nurse.
“She should have been seen by the nurse. Their excuse was that the nurse was gone, so the second thing you should have done is call me and got her to the hospital,” said Scott.
After a visit to the hospital, Scott says Vivian had an injury to her lower spine and right kidney.
Scott believes proper school procedures were not followed in dealing with severity of the incident. She filed a complaint with the DOE and is considering legal action.
The DOE released a statement to News 12, “Schools must be safe havens and any allegations must be immediately reported, investigated, and addressed. These allegations were first reported to the school [Monday] and we'll take appropriate action based on the findings of an investigation."
Scott says she doesn't fully blame her granddaughter's classmate for what she calls an assault. She says the responsibility lays with the school to take immediate action.
