Action Corps holds meeting in Riverdale to fight against US support of Saudi, Yemen conflict

Posted: Updated:
RIVERDALE -

The nonprofit organization Action Corps spent their Sunday community meal at the Riverdale Temple, addressing the humanitarian crises in Yemen and Burma and explaining what's being done to help.

The organization says that many Americans don't know that the United States has been supplying bombs and missiles to support the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen where half the population is on the brink of famine.

Yemeni-Americans shared their horrifying experiences with the crowd when they lived in Yemen and explained the advocacy work being done now.

They've protested and met with a number of politicians such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative Eliot Engel whose district covers the Bronx and Westchester.

Action Corps took this day to thank him for what he has done so far in the fight and encouraged him to do more. The congressmember is also the chair of the house foreign affairs committee and has a big role to play in ending this crisis.

"I don't think we can have business as usual with a country that's not playing fair game with poor, defenseless people and there are all kinds of reports of atrocities, school buses being bombed and things like that. I mean that's not something the United States should finance," says Engel.

Amendments have been introduced to the National Defense Authorization Act which prohibits United States support and participation in the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen. One Yemeni-American with Action Corps says she's feeling positive for the vote coming up in a couple of months.

"I'm really optimistic with what's going to happen next, but at the end of the day we don't know what's going to happen. We're going to try our best to push to end the war in Yemen," says Somia Elrowmeim, board chair of Action Corps.

The organization is also very concerned about the genocide of the Rohingya people and Burma.

They're calling on Rep. Engel's continued leadership to hold those leaders accountable.
