Police: 7-year-old boy falls from window at Bronx River Houses
Police say a 7-year-old boy fell from a window at the Bronx River Houses in Soundview Saturday.
The incident happened on the ninth floor of the building located at 1435 Harrod Ave.
Police say the child was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi in critical condition.
A family friend tells News 12 that the boy was undergoing surgery for his injuries. She says he suffered broken bones and bleeding in his brain, and says the family is asking for prayers.
Police say the boy's mother was in the apartment at the time.  They say he pushed the paneling next to the air conditioning unit, causing him to fall out of the window.
Police are considering it to be an accident.
The boy's mother says he has Down syndrome.
His identity has not been released.
A spokesperson for the city's Administration for Children's Services released a statement saying, "Our top priority is protecting the safety and well-being of all children in New York City. We are investigating this case with the NYPD."
CORRECTION: Original reporting noted the boy had autism, but his mother said in a Facebook post he had Down syndrome, not autism.
