Major League Baseball and Nike have announced a new merchandise agreement that will allow several Yankees retail stores on River Avenue to stay in business.
Under the newly inked deal between Nike, MLB and eight Bronx businesses that were in jeopardy of closing, the mom-and-pop shops will continue to carry and sell official Yankees merch.
The Bronx borough president's office applauded the new agreement with the shops, some of which have been in business for more than three generations, saying, "I am pleased to learn that the New York Yankees, Nike and Major League Baseball were receptive to public pressure to do the right thing, and have heeded the concerns of our business community in the area surrounding Yankee Stadium."
Local leaders say support from fellow politicians, public pressure and the Yankees going to bat for the store owners all helped land the deal.
