Bronx native gives back to community with turkey giveaway

Posted: Updated:

A Bronx native is giving away hundreds of turkeys for the Thanksgiving holiday to give back to his community.

Jomar Quintana, who teaches kindergarten and first grade, grew up on West Fordham Road. He was out Saturday giving away more than 200 turkeys right on the corner where he grew up attending church.

People lined up as Quintana and his family and friends unboxed, unpacked bagged and handed off turkeys. The effort aims to help Bronx families enjoy their Thanksgiving meal with less of a financial burden.

Quintana raised thousands of dollars over the last few months to make the giveaway happen, thanks to donations.

His efforts have inspired his friends to have their own coat drives and toy drives to help others.

"We all have a hand in our community," says Quintana. "We could all do something in our community and do something positive and we could influence others to do it in their community and hopefully everyone comes together."

Last year, he gave out a $1,000 travel scholarship and he hopes to do it again in the future. He's also in the process of writing a children's book.
