Closure of Loeser’s Kosher Deli leaves some Thanksgiving traditions unfulfilled

Normally on the day before Thanksgiving, the Kingsbridge store would be busy filling holiday orders donating turkeys to those in need. But instead – the storefront is shut down and it’s not yet clear when it will open.

Loeser's Kosher Deli is in uncharted territory.
Normally on the day before Thanksgiving, the Kingsbridge store would be busy filling holiday orders donating turkeys to those in need. But instead – the storefront is shut down and it’s not yet clear when it will open.
Two weeks ago, Con Edison turned off the gas to the deli on West 231st Street following a Department of Buildings inspection. DOB officials say they found several violations, most notably – an Ansul valve that is on the wrong side of the meter.
Managers Pam Loesher Halpern and her sister Lisa Loesher Weiss say the news caught them by surprise.
"This valve has been there since 1961,” says Pam Loseher Halpern. “When it comes to safety, that's our utmost concern…we're not going to put my whole family at risk, let alone the community, which we love."
The gas being turned off also meant no hot water.
The sisters told News 12 that repair quotes have been upward of $100,000 and three months of work.
But there's another problem. They say multiple plumbers won’t “touch the job because there’s a stop work order on the premises.”
With the family running out of options, the family says many in the community, including the borough president, have reached out to help.
