Sanitation Dept. issues snow alert, travel advisory

Posted: Updated:

The city's Department of Sanitation has issued a snow alert and travel advisory for Sunday into Monday ahead of a storm that's expected to bring rain, sleet and snow.

Sanitation officials held a new conference Saturday at one of the department's salt sheds discussing preparations for the storm.

It comes amid a big travel day, as Thanksgiving travelers return home from the holiday weekend. Roads could be congested, and the Department of Sanitation is urging drivers to be careful on the roads as they head back home.

The commissioner says there are 310,000 tons of salt on hand in the city, with the ability to bring in more if needed.

All 705 of the department's salt spreaders are loaded and employees will be moving into split shifts Sunday. If needed, 1,500 plows will ready to roll -- if the snow reaches plowable depth.

The Department of Sanitation is stressing that the next two days could bring sloppy travel conditions. It is urging people to use mass transit and to keep safety first.
