A cultural center in Norwood is turning to the community for help as they attempt to raise funds to renovate the building.

The Sholem Aleichem Cultural Center on Bainbridge Avenue has been around for more than six decades and operated as a school even before that. It has helped members of the community celebrate their heritage and learn about their history through regular readings, performances and lectures – all in Yiddish.

"This is the one remaining last Yiddish cultural center that has its own building in the U.S. where there are regular cultural events in Yiddish, " says co-president David Braun.

The center is run on a volunteer basis with membership of just $25 for a family – not nearly enough to pay a roof that it needs. The center has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $20,000. 

As of Wednesday night, it has raised $5,230.
