A Bronx woman who invented a dance and educational program that operates at 40 different schools has recently achieved another dream of hers.
Jessica Remo Saul has opened up a dance studio to serve the Throgs Neck community she grew up in.
Saul, the president and creator of the Art of Stepping curriculum, opened up a dance studio for parents and children in Throgs Neck.
The Art of Stepping teaches step dance through mathematical formulas. It is a STEAM educational curriculum, combining math and the arts in after-school programs in the five boroughs and across the country.
Maxine Johnson’s daughter has been in the program for more than five years now.
“She's come out of her shell. She's more confident in herself in stepping and life,” says Johnson.
A new studio in the Bronx means a safe, convenient place where both mother and daughter can take classes.
“It's our own studio. We can come whenever we want now,” says Johnson.
Saul became emotional at the studio’s grand opening Monday, saying she had to bring her passion directly to her community.
“I couldn't believe that the arts weren't available or affordable. I wanted to create a place that was affordable and reliable. A place that can address the kids’ need,” says Saul.
For $35 a week, children as young as 3 years old and parents can take an unlimited amount of traditional dance classes like ballet and tap to bachata, merengue, step and even self-defense.
“I'm a Latina. I’m Dominican, I feel like I need the kids in this area need to see a representation of themselves,” says Saul.
As a mother herself, she says she wants to make sure her studio is a safe place for everyone.
“A lot of our classes are really geared toward what moms are going through and parents and we've thought this through. I have a 3-year-old, so I know what I want. We really cater to that,” says Saul.
