The New York Public Library is introducing a brand new category it hopes will help New Yorkers fall in love with reading.
Each year, the New York Public Library puts out a list of the best books of that year chosen by librarians across the system and curated by genre, format and age. There are books for kids, teens, and adults.
However, this year for the very first time, there's a top 10 list for Spanish-language children's books. This was an idea supervising librarian Jessica Agudelo thought up with a coworker.
"We thought it was important to celebrate the Spanish-speaking community and show all the books we have in our Spanish language section," said Agudelo.
Like the English books, the list features stories that were published in 2019 and chosen by library staff. The full list of 'Best Books' is posted on the NYPL website and can be navigated based on genre and age group.
The books can also be found at libraries across the city. Also, while the goal of each of the lists is to encourage reading, Agudelo hopes this Spanish list helps New Yorkers not only celebrate literacy but to also celebrate their culture.
