Gov. Andrew Cuomo was in the Bronx Wednesday to announce the completion of one multimillion-dollar roadway design and the beginning of another.
The Sheridan Expressway is now being called Sheridan Boulevard. Gov. Cuomo praised the $75 million transformations -- from what was an interstate -- into a pedestrian-friendly roadway between Jennings Avenue and East 173rd Street.
"50 years later, we're doing it. The Sheridan Expressway is opened up beautiful green space back to the Bronx River, we're going to spend money and restore the Bronx River back to what it should be and clean the Bronx River, that's going to be the next step," said Gov. Cuomo.
This part of the $1.8 billion investment in the South Bronx was announced by Gov. Cuomo last year. It will bring traffic lights, crosswalks, islands and bike lanes to the stretch.
It will also increase access to Starlight Park and the Bronx River waterfront.
Phase one of the project is being called the Hunts Point Project. It will bring three ramps connecting Edgewater Road to the Sheridan and Bruckner Expressway. It will also have pedestrian bridges and a path connecting nearby parks.
That work should be finished by September of 2022.
Phases two and three will bring more highway ramps and will widen the Bruckner Expressway. Officials say the whole project should wrap up by 2025.
