Undocumented immigrants can now legally apply for a driver's license in New York state under the new Green Light Law.

All New Yorkers above 16, regardless of their legal status, can apply for a license or learner's permit. This applies as long as they have a valid form of identification.

Chris Olowene says there should be a stricter process for undocumented immigrants for driver's licenses. He tells News 12 that he remembers the process he went through himself more than 30 years ago when he emigrated to the United States from Nigeria.

"I had to bring about six letters to show where I live. I had to bring a Social Security card, I had to bring my passport and all that," said Olowene.

As News 12 has reported before, the law passed back in June but there was some controversy. Supporters argued that the law is just going to make the roads safer for everybody, but some opponents say there are security risks because of loose regulations.

State Sen. Luis Sepulveda was an original sponsor of the bill. "It's gonna help many people in the community go to medical appointments, take their kids to school. I mean the possibilities are going to be endless," said Sepulveda.

New York is now one of 13 states to pass similar laws.
