Christmas came early for some children at a Wakefield church on Sunday courtesy of some police officers who have a powerful message behind their presents.
The African Law Enforcement Organization provided the presents, which caused children’s faces to lit up like a Christmas tree at the Apostolic Church International Royal Assembly.
"These are the little things that will get imprinted into their memory. When they see a police officer, they can say hi," said Gladys Aidoo, a member of the organization made up of mostly African police officers. She added that the event is her proudest moment as an officer.
"I always wanted to be a cop even when I was back home when I was in Ghana," said Aidoo, who shares the same passion as NYPD Sgt. Yaw Offin, her Ghanaian brother in blue, who also said he that he was born to serve and protect.
"Doing that alone is joy. The fact that somebody can call and you can offer them the help that they need," Offin said.
Officers from the organization raised more than $1,000 to purchase toys to hand out to local children.
They chose to host the toy giveaway at the African church to strengthen what they say is a very special bond.
"Most of this in this African Law Enforcement Organization are first-generation Africans and we picked this church particularly because the kids here, second and third generation, and they haven't seen other brothers and sisters, first generation, become police officers that they can relate to,” Aidoo said.
